Summer can be a time of living easy and enjoying the outdoors, but summertime injuries can spoil the fun. These remedies help alleviate summer injuries and allow the fun to continue.
Twisted ankles are more likely to happen in the summer because people are wearing sandals and flip-flops rather than shoes. Dr. Micheal Rogowski, a physician with M.D. Express, in Williamsburg and on the Peninsula, says if a person cannot put weight on the ankle, then it is probably sprained. The best remedy is to elevate it and put ice on it.
Wasps swarm around in the summer. If stung by a wasp, Rogowski says to apply ice, take ibuprofen and Benadryl. If the throat begins to close, a sign of a severe allergic reaction, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room.
For sunburns, Rogowski strongly urges prevention. Sunscreen should be applied at least every two hours. It should be applied more often if sweating or swimming, even with sunscreen labeled waterproof. He says many people fail to apply sunscreen on certain places such behind the ears and tops of ears.
